Birding on the Platte Species Trip Report
May/June 2007

Wachiska and Prescott Audubon Societies, Union College

"The Platte River is the heart of the western plains, described by earlier pioneers as a mile wide and a foot deep. It was a main component of the Oregon and California trails, and its life-giving water is just as key to wildlife today. We will follow the Platte from its confluence with the Missouri to its headwaters high in the Rocky Mountains, seeing how it impacts in excess of 9 different habitats. . ." (From the trip description as advertised)

Russell Duerksen

Number of Species: 201

An intensive but fun trip, visiting 10 habitats along the Platte over two states. Highlights included three species of tanager, the tame Grey Jays, the threatened/endangered Henslows Sparrows and Piping Plovers, the nesting Ferruginous Hawk, and the breeding colonies of White Pelicans and California Gulls. Big misses were on the gallationous species—no grouse, chickens or ptarmigens. Of course, we can not forget the Mammals: Badger, Red Fox, Coyote, 13 lined Ground Squirrel, Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel, Eastern Fox Squirrel, Chickaree, Colorado Chipmunk, White-tailed and Black-tailed Prarie Dogs, Mule Deer, White-tailed Deer, Elk, Moose, Bighorn Sheep and Antelope, and I may have forgotten several. All in all, a very good trip.

May 4, 2003

Russell Duerksen’s Team

Observers: Karen O’Neil, Laurel Freeman, Russell Duerksen

Number of Species: 121

Observations and Species of Note: It was a clear day, with temperatures from the 30’s to the 70’s. Sites visited included Tavasci Marsh, Pecks lake, Verde River, Page Springs, Bradshaw Mountains, Watson and Willow Lakes, Granite Creek, Chino Valley Neighborhoods, Bond Ranch and Del Rio Springs.
