Chino Valley
16 December 2007

Approximately 25 observers enjoyed a clear, but crisp day of birding on this, the 9th Chino Valley Christmas Count. While bird numbers were generally down, (especially the sparrows, which were significantly lower than normal) the total number of species was within the normal range for the count. Waterfowl species and total individual numbers were also down, which is not surprising, considering the loss of a number of key wetland areas within the circle (including the best diving duck pond), and that several of the remaining areas were frozen over. On the brighter side, thrush and bluebird numbers were good. Probably the most surprising result from the count for this compiler was the numbers of Cassins Finches that were seen, which beat the previous high total by a factor of close to ten, and which were seen from more than half of the territories within the count circle.

Once again, thanks to all who participated, and a big thank you to our compilation hostess, Ann Herrington of the Little Thumb Butte B&B. Next years count is on Sunday, December 21, 2008.

Dry conditions resulted in lower numbers of individuals, however, totat species observed was on the high end of average. We are still attempting to break the 100 species mark. Lowest number of Bald Eagles ever on the count, and two areas that traditionally had eagles in numbers had none. On the high end, the numbers of Horned Larks, with the one Longspur was certainly worth noting.
